Letter-from-rose
A letter from Rose, Rowan & Rose, Sydney. September 2026
Every summer she chooses between cool and covered. Most summers, covered wins.
On the six things that made me choose the AYLA, how it compares to what you have been wearing, and why it is $89.95 in our Retirement Sale.
This is the one.
I am Rose. For years my husband and I have dressed women who were told, one way or another, that comfort and beauty were a trade.
Nowhere is that trade harder than an Australian summer. Thirty-two degrees. Humid by ten. A lunch, a school pickup, a walk along the water.
There are two kinds of summer dress, and you know both.
There is the cool one. Thin straps, short hem, light fabric that clings when you sit. Lovely on a twenty-five-year-old. Not something you want to wear to lunch with your sister.
And there is the covered one. Sleeves, a longer hem, and a polyester blend that is stuck to your back by eleven in the morning.
So every November a woman does the arithmetic. She picks covered. And then she is hot, and plain, and a little annoyed about it.
I never accepted that she had to choose.
The AYLA is my answer. It is 100% linen, cut long and loose, with a sleeve that covers what you want covered. There were six things I would not do without.
It is 100% linen, not a linen-look blend
You can see the weave. That is how you know.
This is the thing I checked first, because it is the thing most often faked. A lot of summer dresses say linen on the front and polyester on the label. Real linen lets the air through. It does not cling when you stand up from a chair. And it gets softer every time you wash it.
★★★★★
"Wore it to a garden party on a 33 degree day and it never once stuck to me. I've bought 'linen' dresses before that were mostly polyester. This one actually feels like linen."

The stripe curves, so the eye does too
Nothing runs straight across the middle.
Straight stripes are honest to a fault. They go wherever your shape goes and they show it. The AYLA's stripes sweep in waves instead. They draw the eye up and around, not across. On a woman with curves, that is the difference between a stripe that works against her and one that works for her.
★★★★★
"I was nervous about stripes because they usually go straight across my tummy. These curve, and somehow I look taller in it. My husband asked if I'd lost weight."

A sleeve that covers the arm and still lets you breathe
Three-quarter length. Covered, not cooked.
I will not stock a summer dress that leaves a woman choosing between her arms and her comfort. The AYLA's sleeve covers the upper arm and stops just below the elbow, where you would push it up anyway. The V-neck is open enough to let the heat out, and modest enough that you never think about it.
★★★★★
"I haven't worn a summer dress in years because of my arms. The sleeves sit just right, covered but not hot. The neckline is lovely without showing too much."

Deep pockets, on both sides
Deep enough for a phone. Both sides.
Keys. Phone. A tissue. Your hands, when you do not know what to do with them in a photo. A dress without pockets sends you back to your handbag every five minutes. These are deep enough to actually use.
★★★★★
"Proper pockets. Phone, keys and sunglasses all in, and I walked the whole market without my handbag. Small thing, but I use them every time."

Cut loose on purpose. S (8–10) through 5XL (22–24), one price
A loose cut is not a shortcut. It is a decision to fit the woman instead of asking her to fit the dress. The AYLA falls straight from the shoulder and moves when you walk. It comes in eight sizes, from S (8–10) to 5XL (22–24), and every size is the same price. I have never understood shops that stop at a 14 and wonder where everyone went.
★★★★★
"I'm usually an 18 and ordered the 2XL. Fits perfectly, loose but not like a tent. So nice to find something pretty in my size that isn't black and shapeless."

Noticed, not loud
This is the one I thought about hardest. A dress that gets looked at can easily tip into a dress that tries too hard. What holds the line is the colour. Black and grey on natural linen. No florals, no neon, nothing that shouts. The stripe is the only statement, and it is enough. Wear it with flat sandals and a straw bag, or a denim jacket when the evening cools.
★★★★★
"Wore it to my granddaughter's birthday lunch and three women asked where it was from. I felt like myself again, not like I was hiding."

The AYLA, against what you have been wearing
| The usual summer dress | The AYLA | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Polyester blend that clings in the heat | 100% linen that breathes |
| Arms | Thin straps, or long sleeves that trap heat | Three-quarter sleeves, covered and cool |
| Pattern | Plain black, or straight stripes that show everything | A wave stripe that flatters |
| Pockets | None, or too shallow to use | Deep pockets on both sides |
| Sizing | Stops at 14 or 16 | S (8–10) to 5XL (22–24), one price |
I refuse to sell a woman something that asks her to be uncomfortable in order to look nice. That is the whole reason the AYLA is in our shop.
Why it is $89.95
Our last pieces, ready to go.
The AYLA is part of our Retirement Sale. Rowan and I are slowing down, and we would rather our last pieces go to women who will wear them than sit on a shelf.
And I would rather it went now than in January. This is the dress the start of summer is for. The mornings are warm, the afternoons are hot, and you want something you can put on at eight and forget about until dinner.
When a size sells out, it will not come back.

I have watched a lot of women hold a dress like this up in front of the mirror. They look at it for a long moment. Then they put it back and reach for the plain one.
They are not deciding whether they like it. They like it. They are deciding whether they are still allowed to wear something people notice.
You are. Go and find your size.
With love,
Rose, Rowan & Rose
